History

Löddeköpinge has history reaching back to the Viking Age when it was the site of one of the major market places in Scania. Borgeby castle can be found in close proximity, which also has a history going back to the Viking Age when it was the site of a mighty ring fortress. The goods transported to the marketplace in Löddeköpinge by sea were loaded onto smaller ships at a harbour commonly referred to as "Lödde kar".

An older C14 dating of this harbour facility to the Viking Age has been made, but it is not entirely certain. Many ships have travelled on Lödde å and there are wrecks of different ages to be found within the broad stream, which have yet to be explored. There are also remains from the Stone Age and Stone Age forrests below water in the area around the mouth of Lödde å.

The focus of the project

  • Charting of ”Lödde kar” and taking samples of discovered timber for dendrochronological dating of the remains.
  • Sonar charting and diving to locate and examine wrecks in Lödde å.

Several interesting lectures about the history of the area will be held.
